If you don’t have any sales experience, either of these sales positions is a great place to get that experience while at the same time being involved with two products (buildings and autos) that use cutting edge energy technologies.

REAL ESTATE SALES
The energy ideal of today is the zero energy home that consumes no more energy than it produces. The new energy homes can provide extraordinarily high energy efficiencies while maintaining the highest level of comfort and technological ease on earth. After you’ve developed a good sales record you can start searching for energy sales positions more in line with what you originally envisioned.
A lot of energy sales positions require an engineering degree, or at least the ad states that an engineering degree is required.
As a successful salesperson with a passion for a given energy product, you possess two critical qualifications - product passion, and proven, successful sales skills.
Once you attain sales success for, say, two or three years in real estate or car sales, you can approach any energy technology company you choose with a dialogue similar to this:
[Yes, I understand that you want a salesperson with an engineering background. But you also need a salesperson with a passion for your product. And you must have a salesperson that can close deals.
While I may not have the degree you want, I do offer a lot of relevant engineering knowledge, and more. I have a proven, successful sales record. I have followed your company for several years with a great deal of interest. I have a developed a deep level of understanding of your product. And maybe most important, I am truly excited about your product, that’s why I’m here today.
(NOTE: Do NOT say any of these things unless they are true!!)
I submit that you will find it relatively simple to help me attain any remaining engineering skills that I might need to be successful selling your product. You will find it far more difficult to help a degreed engineer acquire the necessary sales skills. And there is no way you can teach anyone to have a passion for your product, a passion that I already possess. (Be absolutely sure that you know why you are passionate about that product!)
When you add it all up, you’ll find that nobody has all of the skills you need, and I offer the ones that are most difficult, and expensive for you to find or develop in an employee.]
Put the decision in your prospective employers hands.
Even if your prospective employer does turn you down, you will probably already have a second choice in hand, and a third, and so on. Somewhere on that list (and you do need to make that list) will be the career you already possess, and you may be surprised at how close it is to the top of the list.
The worst that can happen is that you work down that prospective employer list until you come to your present career. By that time you may even find that you prefer to stay just where you are.
Either way, you’ll play an important role in creating a secure energy future, and earn a great living in the process.
