COUPONS CAN SAVE – IF YOU’RE CAREFUL

You can save money on routine auto maintenance items by watching for sales and using coupons. But use caution. No corporation has a policy of scamming customers. But again and again we hear nightmare stories of customers being scammed on even the simplest repairs.

The old ‘bait and switch’ is alive and well. In the auto repair business it can be found in the form of bargain services like cheap oil change coupons that sometimes become ever growing lists of added ‘services’ like windshield wipers, air filters, fuel line filters, and so on. A $20 oil change can turn into a $200 bill for repairs that may or may not be needed.

To be fair, it is both good marketing and a true customer service to point out real repair needs. But good marketing can become less than honest when repairs are suggested for items that are in good working order. And outright scams happen when customers pay for things that don’t get replaced or repaired at all.

A lot of people prefer to pay a bit more to a mechanic they trust. They do so because they know that their trustworthy mechanic won’t turn a $25 oil change into a $200 ‘repair’.

If you don’t know who you are doing business with it may be cheaper to find a trusted mechanic and pay a bit more, know that only those things that really need to be done will be done, and know that the work will be done right. Check our Find Honest Mechanics page for more information.
